₹835 Crore Ramayana: Why the Huge Budget?

May 14, 2024

The buzz surrounding Bollywood director Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana just keeps growing, and with it, the controversy. After casting rumors and reported walkouts, the film’s Huge budget of ₹835 crore for the first part has set the internet on fire.

This three-part Ramayana, starring Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram and Sai Pallavi as Sita, is poised to become the most expensive film ever made in India. Shooting has recently begun in Mumbai, with Kannada superstar Yash playing the antagonist Ravana. The film also boasts a multi-lingual cast, reflecting the epic’s pan-Indian appeal.

So, what justifies this staggering budget? Mumbai trade sources hint at a visually stunning experience, crafted with cutting-edge technology to captivate a global audience. The post-production work alone is expected to take over a year, further hinting at a commitment to creating a special effects extravaganza.

However, this ambition comes at a cost. Critics question whether such a hefty price tag can be justified, especially considering the success of previous Indian films made on a smaller scale. Only time will tell if Ramayana becomes a visual and commercial triumph or an extravagant gamble.
