Kapu Reservation : Centre Rejects AP Assembly Bill

In a rude shock to Chandrababu Naidu-led TDP government in AP, the Union Government has rejected the Bill on Kapu Reservations passed by AP Assembly. Stating that the bill on Kapu Reservation violates the Supreme Court’s ruling that reservations shouldn’t exceed 50 per cent, Home Ministry has rejected the Kapu Reservations Bill passed by AP State Government.

Since this comes after the ongoing battle between AP and Centre over AP Reorganization Act and AP MPs tough stand against BJP in Parliament, the ongoing rift is expected to widen further.

Chandrababu Naidu government has passed bill including Kapus into Backward Caste after promising them as part of poll promises. The delay in passing the bill had witnessed violence in AP as a mob from Kapu community has burnt four coaches of a train (Ratnachal Express) in Tuni and set police vehicles on fire and attacked a local police station back in Feb 2016.

Following this, AP government arrested the culprits and booked cases against the agitators. Subsequently, AP government has fastened the process of including Kapus into BCs and passed the bill in the AP Assembly.

With Centre rejecting Kapu reservation bill, this is now likely to add fuel to the ongoing fire in the state. BJP is likely to receive huge flak from Kapu community in AP which has significant population in state.

Meanwhile, this move will further affect the ties between the TDP and BJP.
