Jagan Govt withdraws 176 cases filed on Kapu leaders

The Andhra Pradesh government has decided to withdraw over 176 cases registered against Kapu leaders that were filed during the Kapu reservation moment in the previous N Chandrababu Babu Naidu regime, between 2016 – 2019. State Home Secretary Vishwajeet has issued orders to withdraw the cases which are currently pending.

During the Kapu reservation movement, 329 cases were registered under the AP Police Act and Railway Act in East Godavari district, Kirlampudi, Dhavaleswaram, Ambajipeta, Tuni, Gollaprolu, Pithapuram, Guntur Urban and other police stations and 153 cases have been disposed off so far, the government said. The Home Department has recently clarified that the remaining pending cases are being withdrawn.

In January 2016, the Kapu agitation in Tuni in East Godavari district became tense. The protesters agitating for reservations allegedly set fire to a train. A total of 17 cases were registered at the Tuni Rural Police Station in connection with the incident. In 2020, the Jagan government announced that it had withdrawn these 17 cases. The Home Ministry said the decision was taken on the recommendations of the DGP.

A total of 69 cases were registered in connection with the burning of the train. Of these, 51 cases were withdrawn by the YSRCP government in 2019 alone. The remaining cases were withdrawn in 2020. With the recent withdrawal of a few more cases, many Kapu leaders have been given relief.
