Centre Sets A Deadline For Polavaram Project

Polavaram project is reckoned as the lifeline of Andhra Pradesh. Despite being a national project, the construction of it is going at snail pace. Initially the project’s target to get completed was in 2019. But due to the strained political equations between BJP and TDP, the project did not meet the deadline.

BJP Rajya Sabha MP Sujana Chowdary has posed a question regarding the project’s completion and in reply, the Centre has set a new deadline. In its written reply, the Centre extended the deadline to 2021 and added that due to technical issues in the contract with construction agencies, the project completion is pushed to 2021.

Centre’s reply also had details of the budget too. For the 2018-19, the total cost of the construction was Rs 3047 crore while Centre has supported with Rs 1400 crore. As per suggestions of Polavaram authority and central water commission, till date the Centre has sanctioned Rs 8614 crore for the project.

However on November 26th, 2019 the Finance ministry had stated that it will not release any funds until the state government sends audit reports of the expenditure so far.

The ruling YSRCP government is giving least preference for the Polavaram project and will the Centre’s new deadline meets the expectations is something to be seen. If not the budget of the project would further go up resulting in a delay.
