Can’t Return to India as Prisons are in Poor Condition: Mallya

Liquor baron Vijay Mallya, who is wanted in India for defaulting on loans worth over Rs 9,000 Cr, has come up with a silly excuse to evade extradition by the Indian authorities. He has told the UK court that he can’t return to India as ‘prisons there aren’t up to international standards’.

Responding immediately, Indian authorities have dismissed Mallya’s claims. The Mumbai prison authorities have written a letter, which was produced in the UK court, mentioning all the facilities that are available inside the Arthur Road prison in Mumbai, where Mallya will be lodged upon extradition. They claim that he will be placed in a high security cell, will be provided 24×7 medical facility, periodic health check ups, and they boast of having one of the top hospitals in Mumbai just 2 km away in case of emergency.

The UK court is hearing the case after Mallya got arrested for the second time on October 3 this year. He was arrested for the first time in April, but got bail immediately on both the occasions.

Indian authorities in the meanwhile have been working on ways to bring back Mallya from the UK, where he has been residing ever since he fled from India. The recent arrests and cases on Mallya in UK are a direct result of Indian authorities making an extradition request.
