The grand-old party, Indian National Congress, which had ruled the country for 60 years, is now suffering from scarcity of funds. If reports are anything to go by, the party has now become “poor”. After a severe poll drubbing in 2014 general elections where the party saw complete rout and its total Lok Sabha members were restricted to 44, the party is said to be going through financial crunch. Lack of corporate funding is considered as one of the major reasons for the present fund crisis.

With this, it’s widely buzzed that Congress party is in difficult state to pay salaries to its full-time employees and meet the expenses of the party offices in the states. Except in Karnataka, where Congress is in ruling, the rest of the state units are struggling for funds. However, political pundits say that Congress party might have become “poor” but its leaders are still “very rich” and they opine that party would be depending on them to overcome this phase.

In a recent circular, Congress senior treasurer Motilal Vora has asked the party state units, Pradesh(PCC) and District Congress Committees(DCC) to collect a nominal Rs 250 as annual subscription fee from all existing party members and new members. It’s also mulling over to implement former PM Manmohan Singh’s recommendation that MLA/MLC should donate 1 month of his/her salary to party’s local unit and MP should donate 1 month of salary to AICC.
