After Padmavati, Manikarnika Becomes A Target

We have recently witnessed what proportion of protests “Padmavati”, a film made on the life of 11th century queen of the same name had to face from fringe groups, supported by some North Indian state governments. Going by the latest reports, another historical film based on a queen might engulf in similar controversy.

A historical film titled “Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi” is currently being made on the life of Lakshmi Bai, the 19th century queen and freedom fighter. Starring Kangana Ranaut in titular role, the period drama is being directed by Telugu filmmaker, Krish.

While the film is currently under production, Sarva Brahman Mahasabha (SBM) – a Brahmin group from Rajasthan has threatened the makers to disrupt the film’s shooting.

The organization’s president said that they had reliable information that Ranaut’s character would be shown having a romantic affair with a British officer, and demanded the makers to remove those portions. He added that those scenes would dampen the queen’s reputation.

“We have already sent a letter to the producer of ‘Manikarnika’, outlining our objections as well as warning upfront if our demands aren’t met,” he added.

Unsurprisingly, Rajput Karni Sena has announced their support to the Brahman group, which had previously supported the anti-Padmaavat protests staged by Karni Sena.

Rational film buffs hope ‘Manikarnika’ doesn’t face the fate similar to that of Deepika Padukone’s historical magnum opus.
