New Rules: Hero to Compensate Distributor’s Loss?

In the last 2-3 years, not just Telugu cinema’s reach and business have flourished, but the losses of distributors (in the cases of flops and disasters) have also raised sharply. After facing substantial number of duds and losing hundreds of crores, the distributor community has finally opened its eyes and taken a first step towards minimizing the risk.

The Telugu film distributors have recently formed a committee, which will be headed by noted distributors – Daggubatti Suresh Babu, Dil Raju and Sunil Narang of Asian Cinemas, and they have come up with a few proposals.

According to them, both the director and hero of a big film will have to set aside 25 percent of their remuneration, and the amount will be compensated to the buyers in case a film incurs more than 25 percent loss. If the film manages to break even, the amount will be returned to the respective hero and director. A film’s producer will keep this money and he will give it to either hero & director duo or the distributors based on the film’s result at box office.

The committee will soon come up with the list of heroes and directors who will fall into the proposed bracket of top league players. All the listed heroes and directors will have to comply with the rule. The committee expects the new rules to result in heroes and directors becoming more responsible during filming as well selling the theatrical rights since 25 percent of their pay will be at stake.

The proposed rules are likely to be implemented from December this year. Akhil’s “Hello” could be the first movie to comply with this rule.
