INS Viraat, credited as the world’s oldest aircraft carrier, was decommissioned on Monday, after serving the Indian Navy for close to three decades.

The decommissioning ceremony was attended by Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar and several other dignitaries. The event saw the lowering and wrap-up of the naval flag installed on the warship.

INS Viraat was built in 1943, during the Second World War. After serving the Royal British Navy for 27 years, the warship was commissioned in Indian Navy in 1987. It held the Guinness Record for being the oldest serving warship. INS Viraat is known as the ‘Mother’ in the Indian and global naval circuit.

The warship has reportedly provided utmost protection to the country during several tense situations. The decision on the future of this iconic warship has not been taken yet. It would possibly be converted into a museum, hotel or preserved as a relic of maritime history.
