In August last year, the union government announced a list of 97 cities which are in race for the smart city status. From the two Telugu states, Vizag, Kakinada and Tirupati were in race from AP while Hyderabad and Warangal were nominated from Telangana.

Today, the Union Minister of Urban Development M Venkaiah Naidu released the list of first 20 cities to be developed with centre’s funds. The list had two AP cities, Vizag and Kakinada, and not even one city from Telangana.

With this, the centre has given yet another rude shock to KCR, who was expecting the good news for Warangal, while he also wanted centre to replace Hyderabad with another city in Telangana.

The centre has asked the governments of the rejected cities to focus on areas lacking attention and prepare for the 2nd round. The cities selected for the smart city status are Bhubaneswar, Pune, Jaipur, Surat, Kochi, Ahmedabad, Jabalput, Visakhapatnam, Solapur, Dhavangiri, Indore, the New Delhi area, Coimbatore, Kakinada, Belgaum, Udaipur, Guwahati, Chennai, Ludhiana and Bhopal.

In the next 5 years, the centre will spend Rs. 3 lakh crore in providing world class infrastructure as part of the centre’s plans for development in the 97 Indian cities and towns.
