Dreaded terrorist Yakub Memon is likely to be hanged on the 30th July, if the Supreme Court rejects his mercy plea. Yakub Memon is the only convict who was sentenced to death in the 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts case that killed nearly 250 people. Yakub could be hanged following a warrant issued by a Terrorism and Disruptive Activities Prevention Act (TADA) court to carry out the his death sentence as per the schedule at 7 am on 30th July in Nagpur Central Jail.

Already, the Maharashtra government has given its nod for Yakub’s execution and even informed his family about it, but Yakub has moved a curative petition in the Supreme Court requesting a stay, following the apex court’s refusal of his petition seeking a stay on his death sentence. The next hearing on Yakub’s petition in the Supreme Court will be on the 29th July.

In the past, Yakub’s mercy petition was rejected by the President of India Pranab Mukherjee, apart from the Supreme Court. Sources say that Yakub’s execution is almost certain however the date of execution may be pushed to a further date if the Supreme Court asks. Yakub Memon was a mastermind in the conspiracy along with his brother Tiger Memon, who allegedly is absconding ever since he fled the country in 1993.
