The new state of Telangana is not so flourishing as expected. With the increased interest on loans and poor revenue collections, Telangana state’s financial condition is poor. In an attempt to avoid further worsening of the situation, Telangana government imposed restrictions to curb wasteful expenditure in the next four months of this financial year (2015-16) and thus wants to save at least Rs 5000 Crore.

CM KCR has convened an emergency meeting with CMO, finance department officials on Friday and discussed to implement strict austerity measures till the financial situation becomes better. KCR directed his cabinet colleagues and HoDs to hold meetings immediately with subordinates to come up with plans on cost cutting.

Finance officials pointed out that Rs 15,000 crore was being spent on miscellaneous expenditure and if austerity measures were implemented, around Rs 5,000 crore could be saved this year. Following this, the CM asked officials to come up with measures to curb wasteful expenditure to save Rs 5,000 crore.

As per the latest rules, the TS government has stopped purchasing things like air conditioners, furniture, telephones, office vehicles, electrical appliances, computers, printers, photocopy machines and etc. Government also said clear ‘no’ to foreign trips of ministers, higher officials on public exchequer in the next four months.

KCR also said to have asked ministers, officials to not to waste money on vehicles, fuel besides cutting down on operational costs in all government offices. Though the TS govt. initially planned to sell its lands to mobilise funds, lost its hope on it due to slowdown in the state’s realty sector.

Many say even if we the government could save Rs 3000 Crore, it would be a big achievement for KCR’s government.
