There are many among us who have the urge and fantasy to go to a foreign country and start a new life. The main reason for that is money and the comfort which the other nations offer. While it is true to a large extent, it is also important for you to have your own share of preparation and groundwork before you land in foreign soil. This is more so in the case of those who are going for low skilled jobs and especially women. The atrocities tend to be more in Arab countries.
In most of the cases, women who reach countries like Kuwait and other Arab nations are hired for domestic help purpose but only after reaching there, they realize the hell waiting for them. In few cases, they were raped repeatedly by their employers in just fifteen days of their arrival. This eventually grew up to become a mental and physical torture including abuse to the highest level.
In few other cases, women were subjected to theft allegations and the Arab employers stopped paying them and gave extra lengthy hours citing recovery of the stolen goods. Women spend close to Rs 40000 for getting an employment in Arab countries but their fate gets sealed the moment they land there. According to a welfare organization, nearly 450 women fly every week from Hyderabad to the Gulf.
Most of these women hail from East and West Godavari and a major part of them are married as well. Owing to the poverty and the lack of opportunities in our country, these women seek a future in Middle East but they end up becoming victims of massive sexual exploitation and abuse.
In one incident, a woman by name Kasturi’s hand was allegedly chopped off by her employer. The lack of a proper government body to look after the welfare of these women is adding to the problems. About time the authorities take stern measures instead of leaving it to the NGOs to deal with the headache because the number of complaints has been on the rise in the last few years.
