‘Cheap’ Scam In Bathukamma Sarees?

The Bathukamma Saree Scheme announced by Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on the eve of Dussehra and Batukamma festivals this year has drawn severe flak from the women community. As part of the scheme, the state govt. announced to distribute 1 crore sarees to all the Telangana women for free of cost. It was said that the govt. was spending Rs 200 crore to procure 1 crore handloom sarees from the handloom workers of the state. KCR daughter MP Kavitha looking into this distribution process of 1 cr sarees to Telangana women.

The distribution of sarees commenced today and it received flak from women on the first day itself. The beneficiaries rejected the sarees citing they were promised handloom sarees and were given silk sarees of inferior quality instead. Some women groups conveyed their disappointment at the scheme by setting fire to the silk sarees they were given. In the wake of this unforeseen backlash, the TRS leaders immediately swung into action and assured the women of distributing only handloom sarees before the festival.

Political analysts say that the Telangana govt. which has been taking up several initiatives to promote handlooms in the state, wasn’t expected to do this. Some opined that although the govt. planned to distribute handloom sarees only, corrupt local authorities may have resorted to this ‘cheap’ scam.
