Vijay Sethupathi’s Paternal On-Screen Bond Creates Unique Challenge

June 6, 2024

Prolific Tamil actor Vijay Sethupathi, known for captivating audiences in diverse roles like the romantic comedy “Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kaadhal” and the villainous turn in “Vikram,” faces an interesting dilemma. As he readies for the release of his upcoming crime thriller “Maharaja,” a recent interview sheds light on a unique reason behind his decision to decline working with actress Krithi Shetty.

Their collaboration in the successful film “Uppena” established an on-screen dynamic that now presents a hurdle. Sethupathi played Krithi Shetty’s father in the movie. He explains, “While filming ‘Uppena,’ I felt a paternal connection with Krithi. It wouldn’t feel natural to transition into a romantic pairing onscreen. I even expressed this directly to the crew when offered the film ‘DSP.'”

This sincerity extended beyond “DSP.” After “Uppena,” Sethupathi reportedly turned down two other projects where Krithi was cast as his romantic interest. This begs the question: will this strong on-screen father-daughter bond limit future collaborations between Sethupathi and Shetty?

While “Maharaja,” releasing on June 14th, features Sethupathi in a lead role alongside Nithilan (director), Anurag Kashyap, Abhirami, and Mamata, and its trailer has garnered positive buzz, one wonders if his decision regarding Krithi Shetty will impact future projects. Only time will tell if “Maharaja” will further showcase Sethupathi’s versatility or if his commitment to on-screen authenticity will restrict potential collaborations.
