Review: Jagan's First Speech in New Assembly

jagan

Opposition leader YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s first-ever speech in the AP’s new Legislative Assembly turned out to be damp squib. Yet again, Jagan has failed in delivering an impressive speech as what he offered was a lackluster one.  If this is not enough, the numbers in his speech and his illogical math behind them is inviting all the brickbats. Check out where Jagan went wrong.

Performances:

Jagan performed well. He boasted off his confidence although he was losing. He tried his best to manage in covering up and buying time while he was searching for the portions he was quoting during the speech. Roja was often seen laughing in the background and seen strongly supporting her leader while other YSRCP members joined the chorus.

Analysis

Starting the speech about criticising Governor ESL Narasimhan’s speech, Jagan labelled it as State government’s write-up and even pointed out their vision upto 2050 while he cracked satire that people’s mandate for the government is only upto 2019. Jagan went into serious debate and started questioning the figures of growth rate claimed by the state government FY 2015-16 and the first quarter of 2016-17. Jagan mentioned the growth rates of Tamil Nadu with Chennai, Karnataka with Bangalore, Maharashtra with Mumbai and Gujarat with Ahmedabad as examples FY 2015-16 and tried to prove that AP government is showing wrong figures. At one point, Jagan openly stated that the figures quoted by AP government’s growth in Governor speech were impossible and only possible by Naidu’s tall claims.

As he began analyzing what is GDP and what are the sectors – Agriculture and allied, Industry and Services – that could lead to increase of GDP, Jagan started quoting numbers of each sector in Agriculture such as fisheries and other industries of the before last year and the before last year when Naidu is not power.

Shocking towards the end, Jagan totally lost his point. Jagan tend to have stated that the figures of 2015-16 would be correct but Chandrababu can’t take credit for it as it was natural growth. Jagan went onto add that Chandrababu has nothing to do with the growth. And this has invited laughs from the members of TDP in house.

When TDP leaders directly shot back Jagan whether actually he is agreeing to the figure or disputing, Jagan remained silent and started reading his own speech by looking at papers in hands and this further only invited laughs.

Whereas climax turned out to be comedy as Jagan turned rhetoric and said by taking dig at defected MLA Jaleel Khan, “People who studied physics in B.Com can’t understand my statistics.” And as one can expect, TDP leaders openly said in house that Jagan’s statistics were such that as if he studied physics in B.Com.

Plus Points

Use of vocabulary and few rhetoric in the speech. And Jagan’s confidence even as he losing the debate are all the plus points.

Minus Points

Lack of proper homework is the big fault as well as lack of clarity are the big minus in Jagan’s first speech in Assembly. Throughout the speech Jagan struggled for exact words and even seen stuttering at portions while pronouncing Telugu words. His speech turned repetitive and often reiterated the abbreviations. He also got confused at times on the key points. Once he said MPEDA as nodal agency of private but later he quickly corrected it as of government’s.
