Procuring H-1B work visa is going to be even more difficult to Indian IT professionals according to a new legislation passed by the US Congressional committee.
Named ‘The Protect and Grow American Jobs Act (HR 170)’, this legislation proposes to hike the minimum salary of H-1B visa holders from $60,0000 to $90,000. The Act dramatically increases the salary requirements for H-1B workers so that the H-1B dependent employers recruit US workers first.
The bill prohibits H-1B dependent employers from replacing American workers with H-1B employees. It also lengthens the no-layoff policy for H-1B dependent employers for as long an H-1B employee works at the company, i.e. they cannot layoff equivalent US workers.
After getting the approval of the House Judiciary Committee, the bill has now headed to the full House. The bill needs to be passed by the Senate, and signed by President Donald Trump to become law.
NASSCOM president R Chandrashekhar disagrees with the US lawmakers, in a statement said that HR 170 would harm US businesses, and disrupt the marketplace.
