TRS backs down in the last minute

The TRS has been maintaining an interesting relationship with the Bharatiya Janata Party, as it is at logger heads with the state wing of the party, while it maintains cordial relationships with the party at the central level. Telangana Chief Minister KCR’s recent meetings with PM Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah are the best examples of this.

While everyone thought that this would continue, the TRS gave a huge shock to everyone on Friday, when the TRS government opposed a decision taken by the Modi government. The TRS backed down from the Rajya Sabha committee to be constituted by chairman M Venkaiah Naidu to look into allegations of misconduct against Opposition MPs during the last day of the monsoon session. TRS stands along with Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in this protest.

On August 11th, some opposition MPs clashed with Marshals over the general insurance amendment bill clearance. At least two marshals have submitted a written complaint of their injuries in the protest, with two women MPs of the Congress, Phulo Devi and Chayya Varma alleging that they were manhandled in this protest. While there are many allegations on this account, the opposition has straight out denied any of it and said that the government is to be blamed for such an unruly scene in the house.

As a result, Venkaiah Naidu proposed to set up a committee to examine the complaints and the ruckus that took place, so that justice could be served. While the TRS initially agreed to be a part of this panel, it dropped from the panel earlier this week, after TRS floor leader K Kesava Rao sent a letter to Rajya Sabha Chairman Venkaiah Naidu, expressing the party’s reluctance to be a part of the panel.
