Supreme Court stays Allahabad HC order in major cities of UP for two weeks!

As a big win for the Yogi Adityanath led Uttar Pradesh government, the Supreme Court stayed Allahabad High Court orders to impose a weeklong lockdown in five cities in the state.

Challenging the Allahabad High Court orders to impose lockdown in Allahabad, Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi, and Gorakhpur amid Covid-19 scare, the Uttar Pradesh government moved the Supreme Court.

Hearing the government’s petition, the country’s top court Supreme Court issued interim orders to stay the lockdown orders in the major cities for not less than two weeks.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who had appeared before the Supreme Court on the behalf of the state government told the court that, the government is taking the measures to tackle the crisis and said that lockdown would result in difficulties for the administration. Tushar Mehta termed the Allahabad High Court’s orders out of the court’s domain.

The bench, led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sharad Arvind Bobde which heard the petition appointed senior advocate P S Narasimha as amicus curiae. He will be assisting the court in the next hearings of the case.

In the last 24 hours, Uttar Pradesh reported not less than 18,021 new COVID-19 cases. The new single-day infections are the record high in the state in recent times.
