Minister resigns After #MeToo Allegations

With the growing allegations of sexual harassment against MJ Akbar, finally he has quit the post of the Minister of State for External Affairs. MJ Akbar has submitted his resignation today evening. Although there is no official information on whether Akbar has voluntarily stepped down or he was asked to leave, inside sources say, Akbar was instructed to put down his papers. Two days after he had slapped a defamation suit against a woman journalist who was making allegations on Akbar, he has resigned.

In his resignation letter, Akbar said, “Since I have decided to seek justice in a court of law in my personal capacity, I deem it appropriate to step down from office and challenge false accusations levied against me, also in a personal capacity. I have, therefore, tendered my resignation from the office of Minister of State for External Affairs. I am deeply grateful to Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and to the External Affairs Minister Smt. Sushma Swaraj for the opportunity they gave me to serve my country.”

It all began when a woman journalist Priya Ramani had made allegations of sexual harassment, inappropriate behaviour at the Asian Age. 19 other women journalists at the Asian Age are backing Priya Ramani in the matter and are keen to testify against Akbar in the court.
