Giving Free Smartphones a bad idea, CM sir

In a meeting with thousands of students who are part of CBN Army, AP Chief N. Chandrababu Naidu promised to give away smartphones to the youth. Referring to the state as a manufacturer of smartphones, he said nearly 14 million smartphones will be distributed.

When asked how a smartphone would make life any better? The Chief Minister said that having a smartphone will ease every family’s pain of access to the Internet. “You can make use of it and have access to opportunities for learning. But, be careful not to over-use smartphones. You will have mental health issues unnecessarily,” the Chief Minister cautioned students.

While the thought behind distribution of smartphones is commendable, giving them away as freebies does not make any sense for any government. What the youth need are skill development and training to be job-ready and jobs which can boost their careers. What they need is for the government to show them opportunities in various sectors which will help them grow economically and become financially independent.

State Governments should not entice people into believing that they will give away smartphones for free and everything else will be hunky dory. If they do so, they should also be responsible for the consequences that come with over-usage of smartphones.
