AP Cabinet resolves to dissolve Council

Andhra Pradesh Cabinet meeting which held here on Monday resolved to dissolve the Legislative Council. The Cabinet had approved the draft bill tabled by Chief Minister Jaganmohan Reddy at the Cabinet meeting in the morning.

The draft bill was prepared on January 19 evening and was passed by the cabinet on January 27. The bill will be tabled in the Legislative Assembly this morning.

The TDP had already announced the boycott of the Assembly session.

The YSR Congress is the only party that would be present in the House, besides the two MLAs from the TDP, when the bill is tabled.

Ending speculation on the future of the Legislative Council, chief minister Jagan Mohan Reddy had tabled the draft bill before the cabinet for its consideration.

Though several of the Ministers and other senior leaders of the ruling party have tried for a compromise on the issue, Jaganmohan Reddy ruled out the possibilities and decided to go ahead with the proposal for the abolition of the Council.

This would be the second time that the AP Legislative Council is being tipped for abolition. It was in 1985, the then TDP government headed by late N T Rama Rao abolished the Council.

However, the Congress government had revived the Council with late Dr Y S Rajasekhar Reddy in 2007.
